Can I Go To Work After Bunion Surgery? – (eps. 7) – on MPMD Podiatry
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello. I’m Dr. Paul Greenberg of Belvedere Podiatry. And this is Belvedere Podiatry on MyPersonalMD.
This is obviously an important question for anyone considering bunion surgery. The answer to this question depends on three factors: 1) What type of procedure is performed, 2) what type of work you are engaged in, specifically are you on your feet or at a desk, and 3) Do you drive or take mass transit to commute to work. The vast majority of my patients who have a desk job are out of work for at least five days, keeping their foot elevated at home. They're able to walk on it at home, go to the bathroom and prepare food. I instruct them to elevate their foot at all other times for the first five days.
e see our patients five days postoperative in the office, if they're comfortable and have a desk job they may return to work. If you are on your feet at work, such as a nurse, retail salesperson, in hospitality, or line of work which requires you to visit customers, you should expect to stay out of work for approximately 3-4 weeks. As a general rule most of our patients get back into athletic shoes around the third week postoperatively at which time they can return to work. A small number of patients do require a procedure which requires non-weight bearing. These people may use a knee-walker, which allows them to return to work sooner.
